Technique Tuesday: Thoughts on Works in Progress

Last week I sent off my packet of work to my VCFA advisor. I felt great about my essays and my reading but my creative work, an excerpt from a novel in progress, felt like total word puke. My advisor was kind, basically saying that the work had potential but asking me to dig deeper into my character. What were his deepest dreams and desires? Where was the heart of this story?

Her comments made me think of another work in progress, the 1891 farmhouse my husband and I are restoring. Check out the photos below.

You see a dreamy writing space, right? No? You see piles of trash? Stuff that doesn't belong, like extra doors and appliance boxes? You see a hole in the sagging ceiling and an unfinished floor?

Just like my work in progress, my writing space in progress needs major work. But when I look at these photos, I see my vision for this place. I see what first drew me to it: the incredible lighting and its potential to be an open, airy space for letting my creativity loose.

This is what I needed to do with my current writing project. I needed to think about why I wanted to write this story in the first place. Behind all my mess, what was it that drew me to my character? I also needed to dig deep into my character's hopes and dreams. What is his vision for himself?

And now it's time to start taking bets on which will be finished first, the writing space or the novel. :-)

This is a great design. I love your idea of having a wide space and it is also a relaxing space with more air to breathe.

I ordered a job spell on a Friday night and on Monday the place I applied for a job called for me to come by their office. They gave me the job I applied for and made me an offer of more per hour than I have ever made in my life! I am so happy! Government jobs sometimes are a slow process. You somehow managed to speed up that process, and I start in just a few days! DR EMU I will be forever grateful thanks once again. You can call on him for help on his email address emutemple@gmail.com or add him up on his WhatsApp +2347012841542. DR EMU also lent a helping hand to the following } 1. GETTING YOUR EX LOVER BACK. 2. WINNING LOTTERIES. 3. CHILD BEARING. 4. BREAKING OF GENERATION COURSE. 5. GETTING OF JOB. 6. JOB PROMOTION. 7. HERBAL CARE. 8. SPIRITUAL PROTECTION. 9. HERBAL CARE. 10. Reflections on Writing

I love few things better than a bottomless to-read list of books and firmly believe the world has room for all the stories we want to share. This blog is intended to provide resources and spark discussion about improving writing. Opinions are my own and not intended to discredit anyone else's work, only to open conversation. Thanks for reading!
